I have been advised that other nests have been observed around Canberra where neither bird attending the nest was in male breeding plumage. In these cases it has been suggested that the male is the bird with the red smudge on the forehead and the female the one without the red smudge. This observation appears to be consistent with the birds attending this nest where the bird sitting on the nest does not have the red smudge.
