Paul started birding in 1979 when a primary school teacher gave him the opportunity to do a project on birds (looking out of the window) rather than proper school work! This quickly lead to an obsession and by 1984 Paul was chasing rare birds the length and breadth of the UK. In 1988 Paul packed in twitching to concentrate on finding his own birds. He spent every available hour at Flamborough Head and over the next ten years his self found rarities included Lesser Crested Tern, White-tailed Eagle, Desert Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Booted Warbler, Blyth's Pipit, Olive-backed Pipit, Dusky Warbler, Paddyfield Warbler and Sardinian Warbler. Family commitments have meant that his British birding has been curtailed since 1998. In 1991 Paul set up his own birdwatching holiday company. He is the owner of Leeds-based Bird Holidays.
