Juan was born in 1975 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and that's where he lives today. He started birding at the age of nine, after going through a dinosaur phase, an airplane phase, and then a general wildlife phase, in that order. One of his fondest memories is that of a Lufthansa 747 approaching Montevideo airport. About that he says, “Hey, I was seven ys old! But still, that's something I never told many people about...”He volunteered during many survey projects in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil after high-school. During this time he was lucky to be part of interesting observations, ranging from new country records, to the rediscovery of birds such as White-winged Nightjar and Austral Rail. He studied biology at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, where he went out birding twice, or so. After that he continued with some conservation oriented research in Brazil and Argentina. From the former will eventually come a few new species, whenever he and his colleagues get their acts together, he reports. Juan has published a number of notes/articles/papers about his field-work, and also an Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Argentina, published by no other than Lynx Edicions. Nowadays he is an almost full-time birdwatching guide and works with three colleagues in their own company, Seriema Nature Tours, www.seriematours.com. He is really into tape-recording bird voices and has accumulated a decent collection of sounds. His bird interests are mostly with issues of biogeography, taxonomy, systematics and conservation. And because birds are not everything, here is a picture at a recent U2 concert in Buenos Aires, something that he enjoyed as much as most of the birding he’s done.
