Gary W. Kaiser is a marine bird biologist who lives on Canada’s west coast. From 1974 until 1999 he was a populations biologist for the Canadian Wildlife Service and still works on Marbled Murrelets and other seabirds whenever the opportunity arises. During his career he initiated studies of migrant sandpipers and led the seabird colony inventory.
In 1995 he supervised the program that successfully exterminated the rats on Langara Island, re-creating habitat for thousands of Ancient Murrelets. He also developed a capture technique for Marbled Murrelets and was one of the first biologists to use radio telemetry to find their nest sites. His most enjoyable experiences as a biologist stem from his participation in Environment Canada’s Programma Latino America. Not only did he get to do field work in the tropical forests of Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico but he was able to give students from Latin America the chance to experience temperate ecosystems in Canada.
He is a co-author of Birds of British Columbia and Seabirds of the Russian Far East.
He is also deeply interested in the evolution of birds and, in March 2007, he published The Inner Bird: Anatomy and Evolution (UBC Press).
