David Ascanio is from Caracas, Venezuela. He has been guiding treks and birding tours since 1984. Nowadays he leads tours to Guyana, Suriname, Panama, the ABC Islands (Netherlands Antilles), Trinidad and Tobago and the Amazon River across Peru, Colombia and Brazil. In addition to many trips, David was appointed several times to join the board of directors of the Sociedad Venezolana de Ecoturismo and he was also elected in the last decade to join the board of directors of the Sociedad Conservacionista Audubon de Venezuela.
He mixes his passion for birds with his studies of bird vocalizations using his private library with more than 500 hours of recordings. Some of his publications and workshops include Wildlife List of Hato el Cedral (1993), Techniques of Environmental Interpretation, Hato Piñero (1994), Calendar of Nature Events in Venezuela, (contributing author, 1995), Bird List of Southeastern Venezuela (Bolivar state, future publication), Manual of the Ecotourism Guide & Tour Leader (1998) plus many manuscripts.
Nowadays, David works with VENT (Victor Emanuel Nature Tours) and for his own company as a leader for several neotropical countries. He also works closely with various organizations. At the Museo de Historia Natural La Salle he has been assisting Marcos Salcedo for decades with the identification and publication of new information being deposited and he is usually appointed as the recordist for the expeditions of the Coleccion Ornitológica Phelps. Additionally, he has guided birding tours for Birdquest, Geodyssey, MOT Nature Tours, Caligo Ventures, Ornitholidays, Danish Ornithological Society, Smithsonian Institution and National Audubon Society. He has also worked with personalities such as Steve Hilty, Bob Ridgely, Richard ffrench, Andrew Whittaker, John Kricher, Barry Lopez, Frank Gill, Robin Restall and Miguel Lentino.
