Christian is a native of Spain, but he developed an interest for African ornithology while undertaking his military service in the Canary Islands and the Spanish Sahara of North Africa. Moving to South Africa in 1990 to study at the Universities of Natal and Cape Town, he quickly got to grips with the region's diverse avifauna. During the summer vacations he worked and guided bird tours for private game reserves and lodges in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe and the Lowveld of the Limpopo River valley in northern South Africa.
In 1997, while raising funds for his doctoral studies, Christian was contracted by the World Wildlife Fund in South Africa to monitor the impact of longline fisheries on seabirds in South African waters. His recommendations lead to the implementation of deterrence measures to curb seabird bycatch in longline operations. He is currently researching the breeding behaviour of hornbills in Namibia for his doctorate at the Percy FitzPatrick Institute for African Ornithology.
Christian speaks Spanish, French, Portuguese, English and Catalan fluently, and understands German.
