Based in the Washington, DC metro region. I've been actively interested in birds and birding since late 2009. I have been taking photos of natural subjects since long before that, so it was only natural to start pointing my camera at birds then. I started out using a Canon PowerShot S5 IS, but quickly realized I needed more reach and picked up a 2x telephoto lens for it. It didn't do a great job, so in September 2010 I moved up to a Canon PowerShot SX30 with more reach, but it's still a point-and-shoot and my images demonstrated that. In June of 2012, I finally moved to a Canon 7D and am very glad I did so. I use the SX30 for video as well as still images. Additionally, I picked up a Tascam DR-07MKII handheld audio recorder to try to capture both bird songs I know and bird songs I'd like to have identified.
