Ade started his passion for natural history at an early age but by his teens the magic of birds had become his main obsession. He studied biology at the University of East Anglia in England to be near the North Norfolk coast birding hotspots and other like-minded birders. Whilst at university he grew much more interested in bird conservation through being involved in expeditions outside of Europe. Nine months in South-East Asia carrying out coastal surveys for waterbirds and a summer spent in the Chiapan highlands of southern Mexico started a long standing interest in these parts of the world. After university he returned to Asia to carry out surveys of the highly threatened wetlands of the Yellow Sea in South Korea with the Asian Wetland Bureau. From there he spent two years back in Mexico working at El Triunfo, home to the Horned Guan and other endemic birds. He studied the Azure-rumped Tanager but also worked with his partner, Melanie Heath, on a floristic inventory of the cloud forest reserve. Since returning to England in 1991 Ade has worked at BirdLife International. For the past three years he has been their Head of Communications. Before that he was involved in BirdLife's conservation work in Asia and Latin America. This included working in Indonesia and Vietnam, where he was involved in reviews of the countries protected areas systems. During his work with Latin America he co-published a book on the key areas for the continent's endangered bird species. He is a co-author of two books looking at the distribution of the world's birds: Putting Biodiversity on the map (1992) and Endemic Bird Areas of the World: priorities for biodiversity conservation (1997). Ade was a Council member of the Oriental Bird Club and editor of their bulletin for five years and is still involved with the club.
