Taxonomy: Centurus rubriventris pygmæus Ridgway, 1885, Cozumel Island, Mexico.
Sometimes combined with other barred congeners in a separate genus Centurus. Forms a superspecies with M. rubricapillus, and sometimes treated as conspecific, but geographical isolation, combined with minor morphological differences, supports allospecies treatment. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- rubricomus J. L. Peters, 1948 - Yucatán Peninsula S to C Belize.
- pygmaeus (Ridgway, 1885) - Cozumel I (off E Yucatán Peninsula).
- tysoni (Bond, 1936) - Guanaja I (off N Honduras).
