Forms a superspecies with E. icteropygialis. Monotypic.
Distribution: Somalia (except NW, NE & S), S & SE Ethiopia, NE Uganda (Moroto) and N & E Kenya (Turkana to Marsabit and Mandera, and S to Samburu, middle R Tana and Tsavo East National Park).
