Taxonomy: Pterocles gutturalis A. Smith, 1836, near Kurrichane, western Transvaal, South Africa.
In past, sometimes included in genus Eremialector. Birds from E of L Tanganyika formerly separated as race tanganjicae. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- saturatior Hartert, 1900 - Ethiopia S through Kenya and Tanzania to extreme N Zambia.
- gutturalis A. Smith, 1836 - S Zambia and W Zimbabwe S through Botswana to N Cape Province and W Transvaal.
