Taxonomy: Icterus xanthomus P. L. Sclater, 1862, Mexico; error = Puerto Rico.
Closely related to and possibly forming a superspecies with A. humeralis. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- xanthomus (P. L. Sclater, 1862) - Puerto Rico.
- monensis Barnés, 1945 - Mona I, off W Puerto Rico.
