Woodpeckers (Picidae)

Yellow-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes flavifrons) - HBW 7, p. 443

French: Pic à front jaune German: Goldmaskenspecht Spanish: Carpintero Arcoiris

Taxonomy: Picus flavifrons Vieillot, 1818, Brazil.
Sometimes placed in a separate genus Tripsurus, along with M. pucherani, M. chrysauchen and M. cruentatus. Forms a superspecies with last of those, sometimes also including first two. Birds from E & S of range, generally much darker below than NW populations, are sometimes separated as race rubriventris, but considerable variation exists throughout entire range; recognition of geographical races considered unwarranted. Monotypic.

Distribution: E & SE Brazil from Bahia and Goiás S to SE Mato Grosso and Rio Grande do Sul, E Paraguay and NE Argentina (Misiones).
