Taxonomy: Bucco chrysoconus Temminck, 1832, Senegal.
Forms a superspecies with P. pusillus, overlapping very narrowly in Ethiopia and E South Africa and apparently not hybridizing; both are also closely related to P. bilineatus and P. subsulphureus, and perhaps fairly close to P. atroflavus. Proposed races schubotzi (WC Niger to SW Sudan), zedlitzi (E Sudan) and centralis (NE Zaire and Uganda) regarded as synonyms of chrysoconus; schoanus (C Ethiopia) included in xanthostictus; and rhodesiae (SW Zaire to Malawi) and mayri (S Zaire to NE Angola) in extoni... Subspecies and Distribution:

  • chrysoconus (Temminck, 1832) - SW Mauritania and Senegal E to NW Ethiopia, S to N edge of forest in C Cameroon, N & NE Zaire, Burundi and NW Tanzania.
  • xanthostictus (Blundell & Lovat, 1899) - highlands of C & S Ethiopia.
  • extoni (E. L. Layard, 1871) - Angola and S Zaire E to S Tanzania, S to NC Namibia, N Botswana, Transvaal and S Mozambique.
