Taxonomy: Vireolanius eximius S. F. Baird, 1866, "Bogotá", Colombia.
Genus formerly placed in its own separate family, Vireolaniidae; alternatively, is sometimes placed in a subfamily, Vireolaniinae. Present species has been placed by some authorities in separate genus, Smaragdolanius, along with V. pulchellus and V. leucotis. Possibly forms a superspecies with V. pulchellus and often treated as conspecific, being very similar in plumage and vocalizations; no known intergrades between the two where ranges approach each other in E Panama. Subspecies and Distribution:

  • mutabilis Nelson, 1912 - E Panama (E Darién, Cana) and NW Colombia (Córdoba, Antioquia, N Chocó).
  • eximius S. F. Baird, 1866 - N Colombia (SW Guajira and Cesar S to Santander and Boyacá) and NW Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá, W Zulia and S Táchira).
