Barbets (Capitonidae)
Yellow-breasted Barbet (Trachyphonus margaritatus) - HBW 7, p. 176
French: Barbican perlé
German: Perlenbartvogel
Spanish: Barbudo Perlado
Taxonomy: Bucco margaritatus Cretzschmar, 1826, Sennar, east-central Sudan.
Forms a superspecies with T. erythrocephalus, and the two are sometimes considered conspecific; both are related rather closely to T. darnaudii, less so to T. vaillantii. Validity of subdivision into races perhaps questionable; also, NE Sudan birds, described as race kingi, and those from C Sudan, as berberensis, both considered indistinguishable from nominate. Two subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- margaritatus (Cretzschmar, 1826) - E Mauritania E to Chad, C & NE Sudan, N Ethiopia, and Eritrea.
- somalicus Zedlitz, 1910 - E Ethiopia and Djibouti to N Somalia.
