Other common names: Brown Pintail; Niceforo's Pintail (niceforoi); Chilean Pintail (spinicauda); South Georgian Teal/Pintail (georgica)
Taxonomy: Anas georgica Gmelin, 1789, Georgia Australi America.
Forms superspecies with A. acuta, with which is sometimes partitioned off in genus Dafila. Subspecies niceforoi, described in 1946, considered to be extinct by 1956. Race spinicauda sometimes considered full species. Two living subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- spinicauda Vieillot, 1816 - extreme S Colombia southwards to Tierra del Fuego, and eastwards to E Argentina; Falkland Is.
- georgica Gmelin, 1789 - South Georgia.
