Jacamars (Galbulidae)

Yellow-billed Jacamar (Galbula albirostris) - HBW 7, p. 95

French: Jacamar à bec jaune German: Gelbschnabel-Glanzvogel Spanish: Jacamará Piquigualdo

Taxonomy: Galbula albirostris Latham, 1790, South America = Cayenne.
Forms a superspecies with G. cyanicollis; the two are sometimes considered conspecific, but no intergradation has been observed in zone of potential sympatry in R Ucayali Valley, NE Peru, and their populations are otherwise separated by R Amazon almost throughout its length. Race chalcocephala possibly a distinct species, as morphological differences from nominate race considerable and apparently constant, with no intergrades known; further studies needed in zone of potential overlap in Venezuela (upper R Orinoco) to clarify its taxonomic status. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • albirostris Latham, 1790 - E Colombia (Mitú, Vaupés), S & E Venezuela (S of R Orinoco), the Guianas and N Brazil (N of Amazon).
  • chalcocephala Deville, 1849 - SE Colombia E of Andes (S of Meta), E Ecuador and W Brazil (upper R Negro) S to NE Peru (S to upper R Ucayali); possibly also S Venezuela (upper R Orinoco).
