Other common names: Mediterranean Shearwater; Levantine Shearwater (yelkouan); Balearic Shearwater (mauretanicus)
Taxonomy: Procellaria Yelkouan Acerbi, 1827, the Bosphorus, opposite Bujukdere.
Often placed in P. puffinus. Sometimes split into two species. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- yelkouan (Acerbi, 1827) - S France and E Algeria to Turkey and Bulgaria.
- mauretanicus Lowe, 1921 - Balearic Is (W Mediterranean).
