Taxonomy: Brachyramphus hypoleucus Xántus de Vesey, 1860, Cape San Lucas, Baja California.
Sometimes placed in Brachyramphus. Both races sympatric with closely related S. craveri at San Benito Is (Baja California), where further study required to determine degree of mixing and gene exchange; may be conspecific with S. craveri. Race scrippsi sometimes considered a separate species. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- scrippsi Green & Arnold, 1939 - S Californian Channel Is and islands off W coast of Baja California S to at least San Benito Is.
- hypoleucus (Xántus de Vesey, 1860) - NW Baja California (San Benito Is, Guadalupe I); status uncertain on Santa Barbara I, Channel Is, in S California.
