Woolly-necked Stork (Ciconia episcopus) - HBW 1, p. 459

Other common names: White-necked/Bishop Stork

Taxonomy: Ardea episcopus Boddaert, 1783, Coromandel Coast.
Formerly placed in monospecific genus Dissoura. Sometimes includes C. stormi, but now generally regarded as separate species (see page 436). Validity of race neglecta disputed; some doubt as to geographical limits of subspecies in SE Asia. Three subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • microscelis G. R. Gray, 1848 - Tropical Africa.
  • episcopus (Boddaert, 1783) - India to Indochina and N Malay Peninsula; Philippines.
  • neglecta (Finsch, 1904) - Java and Wallacea.
