Taxonomy: Charadrius wilsonia Ord, 1814, shore of Cape May, New Jersey.
Birds breeding on Bahamas and Greater Antilles sometimes separated as fourth subspecies rufinucha. Three subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • wilsonia Ord, 1814 - E USA to E Mexico and Belize, Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and N Lesser Antilles; winters S to E Brazil.
  • beldingi (Ridgway, 1919) - Pacific coast from Baja California to Panama and Ecuador, ranging S to C Peru.
  • cinnamominus (Ridgway, 1919) - Colombia to French Guiana; also Netherlands Antilles, islands off Venezuela, Trinidad, Grenada and Mustique.
