Taxonomy: Steganopus tricolor Vieillot, 1819, Paraguay.
Commonly placed in genus Phalaropus, but genetically distinct; apparently quite close to Tringa. Monotypic.
Distribution: N Alberta and EC California E to Great Lakes area, with scattered small outlying populations. Winters from N Peru to Uruguay and S to Tierra del Fuego.
