Taxonomy: Scolopax semipalmata Gmelin, 1789, New York.
Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- inornatus (Brewster, 1887) - C Alberta and SW Manitoba S to N Colorado and W Nebraska; winters from coastal S USA to N South America, mainly on Pacific coast, S to N Chile.
- semipalmatus (Gmelin, 1789) - S New Brunswick, Atlantic and Gulf coasts of USA, and West Indies; winters from Atlantic and Gulf coasts of USA and Mexico through Central America and West Indies S to S Brazil.
