Taxonomy: Smilorhis whytii Shelley, 1893, Zomba, Malawi.
Forms a superspecies with S. anchietae. Six subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- whytii (Shelley, 1893) - SC Tanzania to Mozambique and SE Malawi.
- stresemanni (Grote, 1934) - SW corner of Tanzania and adjacent NE Zambia.
- terminata Clancey, 1956 - highlands around Iringa, in S Tanzania.
- whytii (Shelley, 1893) - SC Tanzania to Mozambique and SE Malawi.
- stresemanni (Grote, 1934) - SW corner of Tanzania and adjacent NE Zambia.
- terminata Clancey, 1956 - highlands around Iringa, in S Tanzania.
- angoniensis (Benson, 1964) - E Zambia to SW Malawi.
- sowerbyi Sharpe, 1898 - E Zimbabwe to extreme S Malawi.
- buttoni (C. M. N. White, 1945) - NC Zambia; almost certainly also extreme S Zaire.
