Other common names: Velvet Scoter; American/Degland's White-winged Scoter (deglandi)

Taxonomy: Anas fusca Linnaeus, 1758, Oceano Europaeo.
Races deglandi and stejnegeri have been separated by some in a full species, American White winged Scoter (M. deglandi). Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • fusca (Linnaeus, 1758) - Scandinavia E to R Yenisey, C Siberia.
  • stejnegeri (Ridgway, 1887) - Siberia, from Yenisey basin E to Kamchatka, S to Mongolia.
  • deglandi (Bonaparte, 1850) - Alaska and Canada, E to Hudson Bay.
