Taxonomy: Pithys salvini Berlepsch, 1901, San Mateo, Cochabamba, Bolivia.
May prove to be a member of an obligate ant-following clade. Forms a superspecies with G. lunulatus, and has been treated as conspecific. Birds in NW of range (E Peru E to R Purús, in Brazil) described as race maculatus, but intergrade with other populations; moreover, high degree of individual variation in plumage exhibited by all populations. Monotypic.

Distribution: E Peru (S of R Amazon and E of R Ucayali, S to drainage of R Madre de Dios), SW Amazonian Brazil (E to R Madeira, S to Acre) and NW & C Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, Beni, Cochabamba).
