Taxonomy: Tetrao (Lagopus) leucurus Richardson, 1831, Rocky Mountains, lat. 54° N.
Validity of races questionable; all may be invalid. Five subspecies normally recognized.

  • peninsularis Chapman, 1902 - mountains in Alaska, Yukon and Mackenzie, S to Kenai Peninsula and S Yukon.
  • leucurus (Richardson, 1831) - Rocky Mts in British Columbia and SW Alberta.
  • saxatilis Cowan, 1939 - Vancouver I.
