Taxonomy: Xiphorhynchus leucogaster Swainson, 1827, Temascaltepec, México, Mexico.
Suggested sister-species relationship with L. angustirostris seems unlikely on basis of biogeography. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- umbrosus R. T. Moore, 1934 - NW Mexico from E & SE Sonora and SW Chihuahua S to Durango, Nayarit and N Jalisco.
- leucogaster (Swainson, 1827) - W & S Mexico on Pacific slope and interior (from Jalisco, W Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí, S to S Oaxaca) and on Atlantic slope (from WC Veracruz S to SE Oaxaca).
