Taxonomy: Picus cactorum d’Orbigny, 1840, near Chaluani and Chilon, Mizqué, Bolivia.
Despite some variation in throat colour (from all white to all yellow), differences not sufficiently constant geographically to warrant recognition of any races. Monotypic.
Distribution: SE Peru (Puno), C & SE Bolivia (S from Cochabamba and Santa Cruz) and SW Brazil (SW Mato Grosso) S to W Paraguay and N Argentina (S to La Rioja, San Luis and Entre Ríos, E to to W Corrientes).
