Taxonomy: Sterna striata Gmelin, 1789, New Zealand.
Sometimes considered monotypic, and validity of races requires study. Three subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • incerta Mathews, 1912 - Flinders I and Cape Barren I, off NE Tasmania.
  • striata Gmelin, 1789 - North I, South I and Stewart I (New Zealand).
  • aucklandorna Mathews, 1929 - Chatham Is, Auckland Is, and possibly Snares Is.
