Plovers (Charadriidae)

White-fronted Plover (Charadrius marginatus) - HBW 3, p. 431

French: Pluvier à front blanc German: Weißstirn-Regenpfeifer Spanish: Chorlitejo Frentiblanco

Taxonomy: Charadrius marginatus Vieillot, 1818, Cape Peninsula..
Forms superspecies with C. alexandrinus, C. javanicus and C. ruficapillus; all of these have on occasion been considered conspecific (see page 386). Some authors consider population from Sudan and Ethiopia to E Natal as belonging to race tenellus. Other races proposed: hesperius (W Africa to Central African Republic); nigirius (R Niger); spatzi (Rio de Oro); and pons (S Somalia); but evidence too scanty to support recognition of these possible forms. Four subspecies normally recognized.
