Taxonomy: Bucco Morphoeus Hahn and Küster, 1823, Brazil.
Forms a superspecies with M. atra and M. nigrifrons. Nominate and races grandior and fidelis have been considered three distinct species by some authors. Birds from NE Bolivia sometimes separated as race boliviana, but apparently indistinguishable from peruana. Seven subspecies currently recognized.

  • fidelis Nelson, 1912 - Caribbean E Panama and NW Colombia (E to S Córdoba).
  • pallescens Cassin, 1860 - SE Panama to W Colombia (S to upper R San Juan).
