Taxonomy: Anas viduata Linnaeus, 1766, Cartagena, Colombia.
A distinctive species, apparently most closely linked to D. autumnalis. Monotypic.
Distribution: Tropical America from Costa Rica S to N Argentina and Uruguay; Africa S of Sahara from Senegal to Ethiopia and S to South Africa; Madagascar and Comoro Is.
