Taxonomy: Nycticorax magnificus Ogilvie Grant, 1899, Five finger Mountain, Hainan.
Sometimes placed with all other night herons in genus Nycticorax; formerly treated in separate genus Calherodius. Monotypic.

Distribution: E and S China, including Hainan; during present century, only recorded in provinces of Anhui, Zhejiang and Fujian (Fukien).
