Other common names: Chestnut Jacamar (when lumped with G. purusianus)

Taxonomy: Galbalcyrhynchus leucotis Des Murs, 1845, “Santa Fé de Bogotá”, Colombia; presumably = Amazon lowlands.
Forms a superspecies with G. purusianus. Sometimes considered conspecific, but no intermediate forms documented despite their co-existence on R Ucayali, in Peru; studies along potential zone of contact would help clarify their relationship. Monotypic.

Distribution: E of Andes in S Colombia (S from Meta), Ecuador and NE Peru (S to R Ucayali), and W Brazil along R Solimões (E to below mouth of R Purús at Caviana, opposite Manacapurú).
