White-eared Barbet (Stactolaema leucotis) - HBW 7, p. 181

Taxonomy: Megalæma leucotis Sundevall, 1850, Natal.
Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Smilorhis. Kenyan population sometimes separated as race kenyae, but normally considered inseparable from kilimensis. In past, race bocagei of Lybius torquatus erroneously listed as a race of present species. Three subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • kilimensis (Shelley, 1889) - CE & SE Kenya to NE Tanzania.
  • leucogrammica (Reichenow, 1915) - highlands of C & S Tanzania.
  • leucotis (Sundevall, 1850) - Malawi and Mozambique S to Swaziland and Natal.
