Relationships of genus uncertain; most of recent studies suggest that it does not belong in current family, and recent molecular analyses indicate that it should be placed in the New World family Vireonidae. Proposed race ripleyi (from Pakistan E to W Nepal) treated as a synonym of validirostris, and lingshuiensis (Hainan) synonymized with ricketti. Populations in Peninsular Malaysia currently included in race cameranoi, but are in fact intermediate between that taxon and schauenseei.
