Taxonomy: Gallinula phoenicurus Pennant, 1769, Sri Lanka.
Possible races chinensis and javanicus included within nominate due to overlapping measurements, but may well be valid. Four subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • phoenicurus (Pennant, 1769) - Pakistan, India, Maldives and Sri Lanka to E China, Taiwan and Ryukyu Is, and S through SE Asia and Philippines to Greater Sundas; N populations winter to S, ranging W to Arabia. Currently expanding N into Japan.
  • insularis Sharpe, 1894 - Andaman and Nicobar Is.
  • midnicobaricus Abdulali, 1978 - C Nicobar Is.
  • leucomelanus (S. Müller, 1842) - Sulawesi, W Moluccas and Lesser Sundas.
