Taxonomy: Euscarthmus griseipectus E. Snethlage, 1907, Alcobaça, River Tocantins, Brazil.
Has often been considered conspecific with H. zosterops, but the two show major differences in plumage and voice; vocal characters suggest that race naumburgae of that species may belong with present species. Monotypic.
Distribution: C Brazil S of Amazon (C Amazonas E to R Tocantins) S to SE Peru (Cuzco, N Puno) and N Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, Beni).
