Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- phaenicuroides (J. E. Gray & G. R. Gray, 1847) - Himalayas and W Myanmar; non-breeding N & NE India and N Myanmar.
- ichangensis Stuart Baker, 1922 - C China S to NE & E Myanmar and N Indochina; non-breeding also NW Thailand.
