Woodpeckers (Picidae)

White-bellied Piculet (Picumnus spilogaster) - HBW 7, p. 427

French: Picumne à ventre blanc German: Weißbauch-Zwergspecht Spanish: Carpinterito Ventriblanco
Other common names: Sundevall’s Piculet; Para Piculet (pallidus)

Taxonomy: Picumnus spilogaster Sundevall, 1866, the Guianas.
Sometimes considered to include P. nigropunctatus, but the two are vocally different. Race pallidus sometimes considered a separate species, or treated as a race of P. minutissimus, but appears very close morphologically to other forms of present species. Form previously listed as “P. leucogaster”, described from R Cauamé (Roraima), is a synonym of nominate spilogaster, further sampling having shown complete gradation towards typical spilogaster; possibly represents a link between nominate and orinocensis, showing some intermediate feature..
