Taxonomy: Picumnus cirratus Temminck, 1825, Brazil and Paraguay.
Forms a superspecies with P. dorbignyanus and P. temminckii, and sometimes treated as conspecific with one or the other, or both; hybridizes frequently with latter in SE Brazil (São Paulo and Paraná), also occasionally with former in Bolivia. Also interbreeds to limited extent with P. albosquamatus and apparently with P. varzeae. SW races thamnophiloides, tucumanus and pilcomayensis intergrade in N Argentina, and sometimes considered together to form a separate species, but last of those also intergrades with nominate race in E Paraguay.
