Hummingbirds (Trochilidae)

Wedge-billed Hummingbird (Augastes geoffroyi) - HBW 5, p. 660

French: Colibri de Geoffroy German: Bunthalskolibri Spanish: Colibrí Picocuña

Taxonomy: Trochilus Geoffroyi Bourcier, 1843, Cauca Valley, near Cartagena, Colombia; error = La Roble, Colombia.
Affinities of genus unknown; song and nest pattern indicate relationship with Colibri. Species commonly separated in monotypic genus Schistes, but external morphology and behaviour indicate placement in Augastes. Race albogularis sometimes considered a separate species; however, as zone of introgression in W Ecuador has not yet been studied, this form probably best maintained as race for the present. Type specimen of proposed race “bolivianus” (Bolivia) does not match existing population of Bolivia, and may be an artefact of nominate and albogularis.. View all taxonomy...
