Taxonomy: Diomedea exulans Linnaeus, 1758, Cape of Good Hope ex Edwards.
Taxonomy and nomenclature confused; should perhaps include D. amsterdamensis (see page 198); type specimen lost, but probably not referable to race of Tristan da Cunha, as traditionally held; subspecific name chionoptera thus gives place to nominate. Populations of Antipodes Is and Campbell I, and of Auckland Is may represent two further subspecies. Two subspecies presently recognized.

- exulans Linnaeus, 1758 - Southern Ocean, from South Georgia E to Antipodes Is.
- dabbenena Mathews, 1929 - Tristan da Cunha, Gough I.
