Albatrosses (Diomedeidae)

Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) - HBW 1, p. 211

French: Albatros hurleur German: Wanderalbatros Spanish: Albatros Viajero
Other common names: Snowy/White-winged Albatross

Taxonomy: Diomedea exulans Linnaeus, 1758, Cape of Good Hope ex Edwards.
Taxonomy and nomenclature confused; should perhaps include D. amsterdamensis (see page 198); type specimen lost, but probably not referable to race of Tristan da Cunha, as traditionally held; subspecific name chionoptera thus gives place to nominate. Populations of Antipodes Is and Campbell I, and of Auckland Is may represent two further subspecies. Two subspecies presently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • exulans Linnaeus, 1758 - Southern Ocean, from South Georgia E to Antipodes Is.
  • dabbenena Mathews, 1929 - Tristan da Cunha, Gough I.
