Spanish: Rascón de Virginia
Taxonomy: Rallus limicola Vieillot, 1819, Pennsylvania.
Forms superspecies with R. semiplumbeus and R. antarcticus; latter sometimes considered a race of present species. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- limicola Vieillot, 1819 - S Canada and W, C & NE USA; winters from SW Canada and E Great Lakes through S USA and Mexico to Guatemala.
- friedmanni Dickermann, 1966 - volcanic belt of CS Mexico to extreme S Mexico to Guatemala.
- aequatorialis Sharpe, 1894 - extreme SW Colombia, and Andes of Ecuador.
