Taxonomy: Bucco versicolor P. L. S. Müller, 1776, Maynas, Peru.
No close relatives. Races well marked, but general patterns similar; also, they interbreed, and intermediates occur. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- steerii (P. L. Sclater, 1878) - N Peru from WC Amazonas S to N Huánuco.
- glaucogularis (Tschudi, 1844) - E Huánuco S to N Cuzco.
- versicolor (P. L. S. Müller, 1776) - S Peru (Cuzco, Puno) to NC Bolivia (Cochabamba).
