Taxonomy: Platyrhynchos vanikorensis Quoy and Gaimard, 1830, Vanikoro.
Closely related to and often considered to form a superspecies with M. rubecula, M. ferrocyanea, M. cervinicauda, M. caledonica and M. albiventris. Five subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • vanikorensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1830) - Santa Cruz Is (Vanikoro), in extreme E Solomon Is.
  • rufiventris Elliot, 1859 - Fiji (except Beqa, Vatulele, Kadavu, Moala Group and Lau Archipelago).
  • kandavensis Mayr, 1933 - Beqa, Vatulele and Kadavu, in SW Fiji.
