Puffbirds (Bucconidae)

Two-banded Puffbird (Hypnelus bicinctus) - HBW 7, p. 131

French: Tamatia bifascié German: Doppelband-Faulvogel Spanish: Buco Bicinto
Other common names: Double-banded Puffbird

Taxonomy: Tamatia bicincta Gould, 1837, Cayenne; error = Venezuela.
Forms a superspecies with H. ruficollis, and commonly treated as conspecific owing to hybridization in Maracaibo region of Venezuela and in Catatumbo lowlands of Colombia; however, hybridization apparently rather limited, with most individuals belonging clearly to one or the other of these well-distinguished forms, and treatment as separate species seems the most realistic approach, pending in-depth studies. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • bicinctus (Gould, 1837) - interior NE Colombia (in llanos), and N Venezuela (S to NE Bolívar and NW Amazonas).
  • stoicus Wetmore, 1939 - Margarita I, off N Venezuela.
