Other common names: Whistling Swan (columbianus); Bewick's Swan (bewickii)
Taxonomy: Anas Columbianus Ord, 1815, The Dalles, Oregon.
Placed by some in genus Olor with C. buccinator and C. cygnus. Subspecies bewickii sometimes regarded as full species. Population of NE Asia has been assigned separate subspecies jankowskii, though doubtfully valid. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- bewickii (Yarrell, 1830) - Kola Peninsula E throughout arctic N Siberia; winters in W Europe, S of Caspian Sea and E China, Korea and Japan.
- columbianus (Ord, 1815) - tundra of Arctic North America; winters in W and coastal E USA.
